The Sony XLR-H2 is designed for recording professional audio directly into the Sony FX5. Its two XLR/TRS combo inputs support professional microphones, wireless microphone receivers, mixers and other balanced audio equipment.
Two integrated analogue-to-digital converters accurately digitise microphone signals while maintaining a wide dynamic range. Recording at up to 96 kHz / 32-bit float reduces the need for constant gain adjustment during production and provides greater flexibility when processing audio in post-production. The XLR-H2 supports up to four audio channels. In addition to the two XLR/TRS inputs, it includes a 3.5 mm stereo mini input for connecting additional audio sources. Audio is transferred digitally to the camera through the Multi Interface Shoe, eliminating the need for a separate audio cable between the handle and camera. The top handle also improves camera ergonomics when carrying the camera, shooting from low positions or using larger lenses and accessories.

Compared with a standard mechanical top handle, the Sony XLR-H2 improves camera handling while also operating as a professional multi-channel audio interface.
Compared with an external audio recorder, the XLR-H2 records audio directly into the camera and keeps it synchronised with the video. A separate recorder may provide more inputs, but usually requires extra power, cables and post-production synchronisation.
