For both experienced photographers and beginners, the Fujifilm X-S20 features a handy PASM mode dial that gives experienced photographers a familiar button layout, while offering beginners an intuitive way to immerse themselves in a storytelling journey. Lightweight and compact, the X-Series is the perfect companion for those who want to create high quality photos and outstanding videos. The Fujifilm X-S20 is suitable for everything from family photos to live broadcasts and offers unparalleled creative freedom. Vlog mode allows you to adjust focus with a single tap and bring the foreground to the foreground while shooting, for complete creative control when creating online content.

BEAUTIFUL COLOURS

Expect stunning colours in every frame. And thanks to improved in-body image stabilisation (IBIS), blurry shots and images will be a thing of the past, even on the go. Enjoy up to seven stops of compensation for crisp, clear results. The Fujifilm X-S20 takes precision to the next level by combining the X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor with the X-Processor 5 image processing engine - a first for the Fuji X Series. As a result, it delivers ultra-fast processing and accurate and fast subject detection AF. Together, these features enable 6K/30p and 4K/60p video recording without the risk of overheating. Plus, you'll never miss an opportunity to create content thanks to the longer battery life. A single charge can take twice as many photos as the X-S20's predecessor, the X-S10. All the while, the X-S20's Vari-Angle LCD touchscreen lets you capture the moment in your own way - whether you want to take a travel selfie or a professional-level video.

VIDEO UPDATES

The updated X Processor 5 provides the biggest boost to the new model's video recording capabilities. This means that 4K/60 4:2:2 10-bit internal video and 6.2K open-gate video (3:2 format) are now possible. "Fujifilm has also included the F-Log2 colour profile, giving users an additional Fujifilm-rated grade that allows grading at base ISO 1250. If you want to use an external HDMI recorder, the camera can now output ProRes RAW or Blackmagic RAW if desired. If you're thinking that this camera is starting to look like a mini X-H2 then you're on the right track. The X-S20 is compatible with that camera's cooling fan, the FAN-001, which easily screws onto the back of the X-S20. This model also features a new headphone connector, eliminating the need for a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. Continuous recording time is a little problematic - Fujifilm tested the camera at 25 °C and it only lasted 36 minutes in the demanding 6.2 K mode. With the FAN-001, the operating time more than doubles to 78 minutes. The new 1080/60P LP mode is designed to make it easier for the camera to record for longer periods. Using a 1.29x crop, which means a smaller image sensor, the processor can take a break from binning or skipping lines; this mode can record for 32 minutes in 40°C heat or 78 minutes when equipped with FAN-001.

VLOG MODE AND UAC WEBCAM

Conveniently positioned on the mode dial, the Vlog mode gives the Fujifilm system a new interface for shooting video. It is designed to make the work of typical content creators simple and accessible. Tap the Vlog button on the touchscreen and you'll get six quick-access buttons for common functions such as stabilisation, auto-timer, eye/face detection, product priority mode (which causes autofocus to capture subjects held close to the lens), high-speed recording switching and background defocus mode (which opens the lens to the maximum). The X-S20 also indicates to the user that filming is in progress with a red box around the LCD preview screen, or a green box if filming at high speed. If you're not a YouTuber, but more of a Twitch streaming operator, the X-S20 can be used as an impressive webcam. With the USB-C connector, you can stream 4K/60p live from the camera. Unlike older Fujifilm models, no XWebcam software is required as the X-S20 is based on the UAC standard.

IMPROVEMENTS TO AUTOFOCUS AND SUBJECT DETECTION

Photo shooters also get an extra boost from the faster X Processor 5 on the X-S20. "Fujifilm says it has added an improved autofocus algorithm, originally developed for the top-of-the-range X-H2S, so moving subjects and especially smaller objects should be captured more reliably. The X-S20 also inherits the X-H2 family's object detection modes. They can be individually selected in PASM or Custom modes. Choose from animal, bird, car, motorcycle and bicycle, airplane and train modes. If you are shooting in full auto mode, the camera will try to recognise and adjust the correct mode based on the subject in the frame.

BODY & CONTROL

The Fujifilm X-S20 is hardly a loud camera, thanks to its restrained styling that focuses on functionality rather than visual appeal. The compact size, DSLR-style grip and dual control dials are accessible - it looks like an average camera. The functional highlights of the body have been adapted accordingly. Compared to its predecessor, many of the controls have been enlarged, with larger dials and more pronounced buttons, but the satisfyingly snappy rear control remains. The resolution of the articulating touchscreen has increased slightly, while the electronic viewfinder with its small OLED panel remains the same as on the X-S10. "Fujifilm has clearly tried to reinforce everything that photographers liked about the X-S10, including the choice of ports. It has USB-C with a power supply for charging, micro HDMI and a 2.5mm microphone jack, which can also accommodate a wired shutter release. The handset has a brand new 3.5 mm headphone jack. X-S10 users had to use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter, but X-S20 users can plug straight in.

LENS FUJIFILM XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 R LM WR

Fujifilm says that this lens is improved in three specific ways: its autofocus is designed to be faster than the older lens, the move to an internal zoom design allows it to be classed as weather resistant and it's sharper than the outgoing version, making it a better fit for the 40MP X-series cameras. The new design is made up from eleven elements in nine groups, making it slightly simpler than the existing design but, while it still utilizes three aspherical elements, it makes greater use of extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, with three elements rather than one. The close-focus distance is improved, dropping from 0.4 m to 0.24 m, with maximum reproduction ratio increasing from 0.15x to 0.3x. The 16-50mm has a rubber focus ring, rather than the ridged metal ring used in the 18-55mm. The weight has dropped around 10%, to 240 g. Fujifilm XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 R LM WR is a standard zoom lens that covers a focal length range from wide-angle 16mm (equivalent to 24mm in 35mm format) to medium telephoto 50mm (equivalent to 76 mm in 35 mm format). It offers high-speed and high precision autofocus, with magnification of 0.3x at the telephoto end (equivalent to magnification of 0.45x in 35mm format). Fujifilm XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 R LM WR features a weather resistant structure (weather sealing applied to 13 areas of the lens barrel) and is temperature resistant down to -10 degrees Celsius, allowing for versatile use in a wide range of scenes. Adopting a lens configuration of 9 groups and 11 elements, including 3 aspherical lenses and 3 extra-low dispersion (ED) lenses, Fujifilm XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 R LM WR suppresses chromatic aberration and maintains high-resolution performance throughout the zoom range. In addition to its high-resolution performance, XF16-50mm also has a close-up capability equivalent to roughly half that of macrophotography in 35mm format, making it effective for photographing food, crafts, plants, and various everyday scenes. By optimizing the placement of the lens, XF16-50mm has a weight of approximately 240 grams, making it the lightest zoom lens in the XF lens lineup to date. The constant-length design, in which the lens does not extend during zooming, provides a truly comfortable zoom operation for users.

1. Which mirrorless camera should I choose for better photo results?

Choosing the right mirrorless camera for better photo results depends on your individual needs and budget. The Sony Alpha a7 III is a popular choice, offering excellent dynamic range and efficient autofocus. The Canon EOS R6 also boasts high technical performance, including powerful image stabilisation. The Nikon Z6 II is another attractive choice with excellent dynamic range and high ISO sensitivity. It's important to consider the features of each model, the choice of lenses and the ability to suit your shooting style. It is recommended to read reviews and test equipment before buying, if possible.

2. What are the advantages of mirrorless cameras compared to DSLR cameras?

The advantages of mirrorless cameras over DSLR cameras include modern technology and lightness. Mirrorless cameras are more compact and lighter, making them more comfortable to carry. They often have a smaller body because they do not have a mirror system, which reduces the overall weight. The use of an electronic viewfinder allows the actual frame to be seen before the picture is taken, thus optimising composition and exposure. Mirrorless cameras have fast autofocus and some models may perform better in low light conditions. They also offer more creative options, including a range of filters and effects. The new generation of lenses offers improved performance and efficiency, contributing to higher quality photos. However, every photographer's needs are different, so it is important to consider your preferences carefully before choosing a camera.
